Project details:

Project: Constructing a new-build extension within the school playground in Wallasey.
Project Value: 330,350
Programme: 12 Weeks

Overview
As part of Frank Rogers’ work for property and construction consultancy company Cunliffes, we built a new extension in the middle of The Oldershaw School’s live playground.

This is now used as a dining facility to feed the school’s students and support its goal to end food poverty in the local community.

Scope Of Works
The extension was to be built whilst the school was fully open, so it had to be safe and secure for staff and pupils, as well as causing as little disruption to daily school life as possible. We established a safe working compound, and works were completed within 12 weeks, on budget, with minimal disturbance.

The works involved a new steel frame structure including convex roof, brick and blockwork, a Trespa® Meteon® cladding system and Kingspan roof, aluminium doors windows including automation, Full MEPV installation, plaster works, doors and full finishes and fitout packages as well as external works.

As the dining extension was situated within a landlocked area of the school, the logistical planning of the project was key to ensuring its success. The off-site compound area meant that contractor thoroughfare had to be managed in between lessons and a strict safe system of work had to be developed and followed.

The wind in particular was a challenge throughout this project, and we had to work reactively with a number of temporary works solutions to make the project work safely.

An Important Community Building
Founded by Dr John Oldershaw, The Oldershaw School is an 11-19 co-educational comprehensive that has been serving the community for over 100 years. To mark the completion of the new dining facility, Frank Rogers commissioned a portrait of Dr John Oldershaw to be displayed in the extension.

Customer Satisfaction & Testimony

Chief Finance and Operations Officer at Oldershaw School, Andy Bush, commented:

“Oldershaw School working with our chosen construction partner Frank Rogers took on an ambitious project of building a new street food restaurant for our children, not only while the school was fully open, but also with the construction site being located in the centre of the main school playground.

We found the Frank Rogers team to be the consummate professionals on all matters, delivering a high-quality finished building exactly on schedule, communicating throughout the finishings and making what seemed a daunting project seem easy.

We look forward to hopefully working with them again and highly recommend this excellent organisation to others.”
