Sir John Dean Sixth Form

Sir John Dean Sixth Form appointed Frank Rogers Building Contractors to deliver a programme of window replacement and stone repair works at the historic college in Northwich.

The challenge

The project presented several challenges due to the age and historic character of the building, alongside the need to maintain a fully operational education environment throughout the works. Protecting the existing fabric of the building was a key consideration, particularly during the removal and replacement of the existing windows.

The stonework and masonry also required specialist attention, with repairs and restoration carefully carried out to retain the building’s original character and architectural features.

This required a sensitive approach to ensure the existing materials and appearance were preserved. Alongside this, scaffold installation, construction activities and access arrangements had to be carefully coordinated within the live college environment. Maintaining safe routes for students, staff and visitors while minimising disruption to daily operations was critical throughout the programme.

Solution

The solution

Frank Rogers developed a carefully phased programme to allow the works to progress safely and efficiently while the college remains operational.

The existing windows were sensitively removed and replaced with new high-performance aluminium double-glazed systems, improving the building's thermal performance and long-term functionality.

Alongside the window replacement, specialist stone cleaning, repair and restoration works was undertaken to preserve the appearance and character of the building.

Each installation was followed by internal and external making good, including repairs to surrounding masonry and finishes.

Scaffold and construction activities were carefully sequenced to maintain safe access and minimise disruption across the college.

Through combining modern construction methods with careful workmanship and consideration for the existing building, the project aimed to enhance the college's long-term performance while respecting its historic character.

The outcome

The completed project has improved the long-term performance and appearance of Sir John Deane’s Sixth Form College, with new high-performance aluminium double-glazed windows enhancing the building’s functionality while specialist stone repairs have helped preserve its historic character.

Through careful planning and phased delivery, Frank Rogers successfully completed the works within the live college environment, maintaining safe access and minimising disruption to students, staff and visitors throughout the programme.

The project demonstrates Frank Rogers’ ability to deliver sensitive refurbishment, and restoration works within historic, operational education environments, combining modern improvements with careful consideration for the existing building.
