Frank Rogers Building Contractors successfully delivered the SSICB refurbishment works at Holy Family Catholic Academy, transforming the school’s infrastructure to enhance safety, efficiency, and functionality. This project, commissioned by St Joseph Catholic Multi Academy Trust, required a comprehensive upgrade of mechanical, electrical Active fire as well as structural works, door renewals and refurbishment works to classrooms, ensuring full compliance with modern safety standards. Working within a live school environment, our team implemented a twilight working approach, allowing us to carry out significant improvements outside of teaching hours, minimising disruption to staff and students while delivering a high-quality, future-proofed facility.

The challenge

This project presented several key challenges, including:

 

  • Live school environment – requiring twilight working (5:30 PM – 2:00 AM shifts) to avoid disruption to learning, ensuring that works from the previous night was fully cleaned and all rooms functioning for the following mornings lessons
  • Complex mechanical and electrical works, including the full renewal of heating, water, and electrical services.
  • Asbestos removal and firestopping upgrades, ensuring full compliance with safety regulations.
  • External structural repairs and refurbishments, maintaining the integrity of the school’s infrastructure.

With a tight 12-week programme, meticulous planning and execution were essential to ensure on-time completion while maintaining the highest standards of safety and quality.

Solution

The solution

To meet these challenges, Frank Rogers adopted a structured, phased approach, working efficiently during twilight hours and ensuring seamless coordination across all trades.

Key Deliverables:

Mechanical & Electrical Design & Build:

  • Full renewal of cold and hot water pipework.
  • Installation of a new gas boiler and full plant room with an integrated BMS (Building Management System) for improved energy efficiency.
  • Full electrical rewire, including new distribution boards, general and emergency lighting, power, door entry & access control systems as well as a new main upgrade and holiday working to kitchens and high use areas.
  • New fire alarm installation, enhancing fire safety across the school.

Internal & External Upgrades:

  • Installation of 15 new internal doors and 1 new external aluminium door.
  • Window replacements and overhauls to improve security and insulation.
  • External structural repairs and installation of new rainwater goods (RWGs) to enhance drainage.
  • Firestopping works to improve compartmentation and regulatory compliance.
  • Asbestos removal, ensuring a safe and compliant environment for students and staff.
